Status and Determinants of Early Detection of Oral Premalignant and Malignant Lesions in India

Key Findings:

  • Oral cancer is the commonest cancer and cause of cancer-related death in Indian men.
  • This high burden is predominantly due to the unabated use of smokeless tobacco (SLT) and areca nut in most parts of India.
  • About two-thirds of head and neck cancer patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, with poor 5-year survival rates.
  • Only 1.2% of men and 0.9% of women had ever undergone oral cancer screening according to NFHS-5 data.
